Meet the leadership team
Michael Gellman is the founder and CEO of Spire Digital, where he is responsible for ensuring the success of every client and every employee. He also directs Spire’s management, vision, and strategy. Under his leadership, Spire Digital has grown to be a multi-million dollar company that has been profitable from day one without funding. Over the years, he has employed at least 500 people and prides himself on nurturing his staff and producing future leaders.
Prior to Spire Digital, Gellman founded his first company, GIG Media, in 1996. GIG was one of the nation’s first interactive agencies. Prior to GIG Media, he served as a writer and producer for television and film with companies including Troma Pictures and The Teaching Learning Network. He also performed stand-up comedy and had small acting roles in productions throughout New York City. And, he was one of the web’s earliest bloggers, publishing his musings online for a daily audience of more than 10,000 readers three years before the term “blog” was coined.
Gellman earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Florida in 1994. In the following years, he gained a reputation as one of the industry’s leading authorities on web technology, lean startups, and digital product development. Gellman has been recognized by ColoradoBiz Magazine as a CEO of the Year and by Ernst & Young as an Entrepreneur of the Year finalist. He is an active member of the Young President’s Organization (YPO) and has held a variety of board posts with industry groups and non-profits. In addition, he has been active on behalf of numerous philanthropic and political causes. And, he has advised, invested in, and/or incubated numerous technology startups. Gellman is a sought-after speaker and has given lectures at The University of Denver Daniels College of Business, The University of Colorado Leeds School of Business, and South by Southwest among others. He is also a published author, an avid world traveler, and a self-professed “entrepreneurial nerd”.
As Spire’s Super Vice President of Strategy (SVP), David helps clients find answers to burning questions: Whom should we build for? What pain points should we target? What are the gaps in our portfolio? Where is the bathroom? Etcetera.
A true intrepreneur, David has spent over 20 years helping products, brands and businesses grow. Back in the mid-1990s, he was part of the team at Celestial Seasonings that brought green tea to the mainstream. Following that, he helped the organic food movement reach the tipping point. His move into the digital realm began just over 10 years ago, having dreamed up a SaaS startup for nonprofits with backing from his alma mater, Oxford University. Before long, his journey into the software world led to high-profile consulting engagements with the likes of Boeing and Wells Fargo, in support of their own digital transformation efforts. Along the way, he also helped a fledgling smart-home brand navigate their way to success.
David’s penchant for wayfinding extends to his spare time. He enjoys serving as a mountain-bike guide for Spire clients in search of magical trails to ride in the forests above town.
As President, Adam Hasemeyer is responsible for leading the acquisition and management of all client relationships at Spire Digital. He began as an account executive in 2005 and quickly rose through the ranks to attain his current position.
Hasemeyer is recognized as a thought leader in the application development world. Business leaders look to him as a source of knowledge on new technological advancements and how they affect e-commerce. In his role, he has developed numerous ideas and initiatives that were instrumental in taking Spire from a local player to a national presence.
Committed to giving back to the community, Hasemeyer is on the board of Pledge 1% Colorado and has devoted his time to Volunteers of America and Toys for Tots, in addition to numerous other organizations. He is a Miami University alumnus and enjoys golfing, snowboarding, fishing, and music. Hasemeyer has a passion for bringing people together to deliver great results for his clients and volunteer organizations.
Sara Szynskie, Spire’s VP of Operations, oversees all projects at Spire, leading and ensuring project, product, and client success. A project management guru, Szynskie engages as a consultant in lean/agile delivery methodology, process improvement, and organizational dynamics. Additionally, she is responsible for team allocations and resourcing, communications and reporting, and client relationship management and account management.
Born and raised in Denver Colorado, Szynskie holds a degree in Information Technology and Business from The University of Denver. With more than a decade of customer service experience, she excels at providing premium professional services while managing and facilitating Spire’s talented delivery team.
When not at Spire, Szynskie can be found spending time with her family, watching her nieces and nephews grow up quickly, running, hiking, rafting, enjoying Colorado, and constantly learning.
As Chief Operating Officer, Nick Coppolo oversees Spire Digital’s delivery team of product owners, engineers, and designers.
Coppolo is a master at distilling complex business problems down to simple, elegant solutions. He excels at “getting from here to there” by identifying assumptions and opportunities, then molding cross-functional groups into product delivery “SWAT” teams.
As a product owner, consultant, and designer, Nick brings products to market for a diverse array of clients and verticals: from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups, enterprise application development to digital marketing. He leads product development initiatives for key clients including Berkshire Hathaway, Pitney Bowes, USDA, Swisslog, and Trimble.
Away from Spire, Coppolo is an active speaker on the topics of product development, lean thinking, and agile methodologies for a variety organizations including Adobe, the Colorado Technology Association, Galvanize, CU’s Business School, Denver Startup Week, Creative Mornings, and Innosphere among others. Additionally, he is a regular guest lecturer with DU’s School of Engineering & Computer Science and a mentor for DU’s Project X-ITE entrepreneurial program. Nick is a recipient of the both Denver Business Journal’s “C-Suite” award and Colorado Business Magazine’s “GenXYZ Most Influential Young Professional” award for excellence in leadership, growth, and innovation.
Holding degrees in Music from The Juilliard School and Indiana University, Nick combines technical acumen with his extensive background in the Arts and Humanities to provide unique, fresh, and thoughtful solutions to our clients’ business problems.
In his spare time, Nick can be found in the mountains with his wife, Lindsey, and dogs, Lilly and Lucy, skiing, hunting, gardening, and cooking.
Director, Product Design
As Director of Product Design, Grace Hartman leads design direction and deliverables for high impact projects at Spire. Grace specializes in turning human insights into tangible products through the full design process—from research to strategy to implementation.
Grace holds a Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Design from University of Notre Dame. While at Notre Dame, Grace competed as a Division 1 fencer where she was an All-American and helped her team win a national championship.
Steve Lloyd oversees all of the firm’s financial activities and heads up company administration. In addition to public accounting experience, Lloyd’s career includes nearly thirty years in the communications industry, spanning a variety of roles from technician to corporate operations manager.
Lloyd graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Florida with a BS in Accounting. He holds active CPA licenses in both Florida and Colorado. He is also a US Navy veteran. Lloyd is active in community service, having previously served on the Board of Directors for a Jefferson County Open Space Park in Conifer and is currently Treasurer for an Erie based non-profit that supports education initiatives in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math.
In his off time, Lloyd, a licensed pilot, enjoys maintaining and flying his aircraft. He can also be found riding his Harley in the Colorado foothills or snowboarding at one of Colorado’s beautiful ski resorts.
Manager, Talent Acquisition
Julianne started her career in Public Relations, working with tech startups to help bring their ideas to life. After four years, she discovered that recruiting might just be her calling – the chance to help people realize their dreams and have consistent human interaction was just the tip of the “interest iceberg.”
She spent two years learning the ropes of recruiting and sales with a staffing agency before joining Spire. Now, she leads all hiring and recruiting efforts for both Spire and our clients. She also has the pleasure of tackling culture-y, fun stuff like team outings and internal yoga classes – namaste.
When she’s not busy being the office DJ and “practically a developer”, she enjoys checking out new yoga studios, doing all things outdoorsy, seeing what concoctions she can come up with using whatever’s in the fridge, petting dogs, live music, talking about finding people new jobs, and memes.
As CTO, Justin OConnell oversees all implementations, research and development, architecture, and technology strategy at Spire, in addition, to directly leading clients and client-teams in the development of critical projects. Specializing in PHP, Ruby, Microsoft .NET, and iOS/Android native development, OConnell excels at designing cross platform solutions that effectively provide for and engage customers and end users.
As a recognized thought leader in the digital space, OConnell has consulted on highly successful business practices and marketing campaigns that help companies leverage the technology they deploy more efficiently, simply, and elegantly. With deep expertise in online sales, OConnell has lead E-Commerce projects for companies of all sizes; most notable E-Commerce clients include the Dallas Cowboys, Rite-Aid, SWFA, Wise Food Storage, CDNN Sports and many others. His years of experience in online sales and digital products are leveraged to ensure the highest possible ROI for Spire’s clients.
Prior to joining Spire Digital, OConnell founded his first tech start-up in 2007. He remains active in the start-up community, regularly engaging as a consultant with start-ups and growth phase companies in both Denver/Boulder and nationally. As a strategic partner he focuses young companies on achieving overwhelming growth in revenue while maintaining low overhead and minimal technical debt.
A graduate of the University of Colorado, studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, OConnell mixes his traditional training with real world experience to deliver the highest quality solutions for Spire Digital and its clients. A licensed pilot, he enjoys flying his wife Adrienne and his daughter Austin around the country. He also enjoys working on and racing cars, gardening and grilling up a mean dinner on his backyard BBQ.
VP, Product Development
As Spire’s Vice President of Product Development, Geoff Calhoun leads customer projects from initial ideation all the way through to delivery. With his decades of software development experience, Geoff focuses on working with customers to find their greatest areas of opportunity and then using Agile methodologies turn those opportunities into working software.
Never one to take the common path, Geoff decided to forgo college to pursue an opportunity to help grow a Chicago based life insurance brokerage’s then non-existent IT department. During his 14 years at the organization it grew over ten times in size becoming one of the leading life insurance brokers in the USA. On top of building out the IT team and systems, Geoff personally developed a brokerage management system still in use over 20 years later. More recently Geoff spent 6 years as a Product Management leader at a large global contact center software company. During his time there, Geoff travelled the world to help understand and define market needs in pretty much every industry vertical from finance to government.
Geoff attributes his success to hard work, a fanatical desire for process improvement, and a natural gift for troubleshooting and design. He enjoys staying ahead of developments in technology and sharing his knowledge with colleagues and customers. When Geoff is not working, he enjoys RV’ing around Colorado and the neighboring states, listening to his stereo, implementing home automation, and playing with his various radio-controlled vehicles.
Manager, Digital Marketing
A Creative Writing major turned SEO, Ayla’s path to marketing was built from very real experience helping enterprise B2B companies kickstart content strategy, demand gen, and marketing automation initiatives. Ultimately, her eyes are on revenue. Fluffy marketing statistics about awareness or impressions don’t float her boat. Let’s get to the good stuff.
As Spire’s Manager of Digital Marketing, Ayla is a mediator and solution-finder. When she has her way, there are no long meetings about, button placement, headline text, or page structure. She has A/B tests, Google Analytics, and clickmaps to answer these questions…faster and with less drama.
Originally from Cleveland, Ayla is unapologetic in a crusade to convince real Denver natives she’s one of them. Her weekends are spent skiing or hiking with 2 poorly behaved rescue dogs. She also serves on the board of Women In Digital as Speaker Chair. Ayla has lived in rural China, southern France, and on a boat in the Caribbean. Needless to say, these experiences have changed the way she does most things, including her job.
Manager, Quality Assurance
A versatile leader with more than 8 years of industry experience, Lance leads a team of highly talented QA Testers at Spire. He oversees the Quality Assurance effort on every project. By utilizing lean and agile software testing principles, combined with strategic test plans that are carefully tailored to the needs of individual projects, his team helps to ensure a consistent industry-leading level of Quality. Lance and his team have established an impressive bench strength drawn from working on a variety of different technologies, ranging from the industry staples to the most innovative.
Lance began his software career in the Airline industry, where he worked in web, mobile, and embedded technology for over 4 years, and has now been with Spire Digital for over 3 years. He’s become an expert on front end web automation and has worked on numerous industry-disruptive projects, assisting the development team in their mission to deliver the best products.
In his free time, Lance enjoys outdoor activities, music, and he loves to spend time with his family and his dogs. A volunteer at MaxFund animal shelter, Lance is also committed to animal welfare causes and giving back to the community.
As Product Lead, Mikaela Mitchell leads cross-functional teams on full custom software development projects at Spire. She works closely with clients to translate their vision into executable work for the Spire team, and eventually, a world class product. As a Lean enthusiast, Mikaela loves to challenge her clients to launch before they iterate and make hard decisions about what their users will care about.
Mikaela is a Colorado native who holds a BA from Colorado State University. When Mikaela isn’t building software, she is cooking, spending time with her energetic doodle, and running.
Director, Application Development
Tina has 18 years of web development experience, speaks multiple languages, and has worked on web projects around the world. She provides Spire Digital with strong Technical Leadership with an International focus.
Tina earned a BS in Business Administration, Information Systems, International Business, and German from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She graduated with honors and won a scholarship to participate in a Graduate Exchange Program in Information Systems at the Universität Regensburg in Germany.
After her college years, Tina traversed the globe to gain work experience on 3 different continents and provide support for international companies such as Sun Microsystems, Siemens, Western Union, and TomTom. After returning home to Denver, Tina joined Spire Digital and has successfully and happily led web and mobile projects for 8 years running. Outside work, Tina enjoys spending time with her family, snowshoeing in the Rockies, and traveling.
Lead, User Experience
As User Experience Lead, Trey Secord brings 25 years of intelligent design experience to Spire Digital. Trey has lead design engagements for heavy-hitters such as Microsoft, Boeing, T-Mobile, TIAA-Cref, Price Waterhouse Cooper, and Viper R/C Solutions. Trey draws on his vast B2B experience to deliver refined solutions, seamless functionality and a wealth of valuable insight to his current clients.
A Washington native, Trey grew up just outside of Seattle on a popular mountain summit where he spent his formative years cycling and ski racing the steep inclines. A bonafide natural born technology junkie, Trey’s curiosity took hold in childhood when he was often caught taking apart his parents’ appliances just to see how they worked. He channeled his mechanical inclinations into building RC cars, which segued into building computers, and ultimately into designing the initial platforms for email and calendaring applications that we still use today.
When he isn’t poring over user research or teaching himself a new program, he stays current in the digital world through his love of gaming, a passion he shares with his wife and children.
