Powering a Major Shift in Healthcare Employment

Health eCareers, the healthcare industry’s leading career hub with a network of more than 1.7 million employers and professionals, came to Spire Digital with an idea. Why not build a first-of-its kind tool that could connect short-staffed health organizations with job seekers searching for temporary and shift work? From inception to deployment, Spire worked closely with the HeC team on the responsive web application that would become “Shift”. Shift is a mobile-friendly online tool that successfully integrates a jobs database, skills-matching algorithms, an applications database, and text and email notifications—all within a modern and user-friendly interface. Launching in less than 100 days with more than 5,000 work opportunities up for grabs and growing, Shift is by all accounts a great and disruptive success.

HeC wanted to capitalize on the growing trend around shift work in healthcare, so speed-to-market for the digital product was imperative. Following a market-place model, Shift needed to empower and entice both of their customers: make it easy for healthcare employers to post available shifts risk-free using a pay-per-apply model, and make it easy for healthcare professionals to find, be notified, and apply for shifts both online and on their mobile devices.

Taking a user-centered design approach, Spire conducted user interviews and observations, and met with stakeholders to define personas. Spire collaborated with HeC’s VP of Innovation to determine the high-level epic, then prioritized the epics according to value to the customer and, as a result, value to the business.  Workflow for the Spire and HeC teams was structured for each phase of development so that no team member would be uncertain of priorities or tasks. Shift was built with the open-source custom web development platform LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP), a reliable, stable and highly efficient web application. Mandril powers Shift’s email service, which is ideal for sending data-driven transactional emails from websites and applications. Twilio provides the SMS service for sending job seekers their daily job-matching notifications and AWS S3 provides the storage for job seeker resumes and documents.

Shift is a classic example of agile web development combined with user experience design. A major differentiator for Shift is that the user doesn’t have to fill out a lengthy profile or give a full employment history before gaining entry into the service. The user simply fills out a few fields, attaches a resume and gets matched to shifts based on preferences such as hourly rate, location and specialty. Spire’s 10+ year relationship with HeC also contributed to the success of the product. When HeC’s development team took over the build, the hand-off included full release notes and the full support of the Spire team. As Shift continues to succeed, UX design and development will continue for every major feature.
